Happy Friday!

It’s April!

This week’s inspiration comes from a piece of wellness advice that’s been repeated so often it almost loses its meaning: don’t check your phone first thing in the morning.

But when it was repackaged with a brand new bow for me this week, it landed differently—you wouldn’t let thousands of people walk into your bedroom at 5am, all talking over each other, demanding your attention. So why do we allow it through our devices?

It wasn’t until I decided to flirt with this practice that I realized what an ingrained reflex that instant reach and scroll bas become. So, on Thursday morning, I challenged myself to go just 10 minutes without checking notifications (I do use my phone as an alarm, so there’s no avoiding that part). Somehow, that 10 minutes turned into 40 . . . and then another 50 as I moved through my morning and into my barre class.

And the difference? Immediate! How you start your day truly does set the tone. I felt calmer, more focused, and—most noticeably—less reactive all day long.

I’m excited to keep building on this practice and (hopefully) make it a new normal. If you’re feeling similarly pulled in a hundred directions before your feet even hit the floor, consider this your encouragement: start small. Even 60 seconds counts.

On Sunday, as I pinned away, I watched Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris—and found myself completely head over heels.

It’s the kind of film that reminds you that fashion, at its best, is not about status. It’s about craftsmanship. Devotion. The quiet, almost irrational pull toward something beautiful simply because it is.

There’s a moment in the Dior salon—soft light, rustling silk, a collective breath held—that feels like pure magic. Not because of who is in the room, but because of what has been created within it.

And what stayed with me most wasn’t just the beauty—it was her. Mrs. Harris, showing up exactly as she is. Not polished, not pre-approved, not “belonging” in the conventional sense. And yet, entirely deserving of being there.

A small but meaningful reminder: You do not have to be perfectly packaged to participate in beautiful spaces.

Daylight savings time absolutely hit me like a bus this week. I am operating in a fugue state and my internal rythmns have lost their beat. But if grogginess is the admission price for spring days officially arriving, I suppose I’ll pay it. The light lingering past dinner! The possibility of patios! The slow return of color to the world!

I gave the album my first listen through this week, and my clear favorite is “American Girls”. It’s breezy, hummable, and feels perfect for driving with the windows cracked open now that the weather is finally cooperating.

This week’s letter is coming to you after a much-needed trip to visit one of my best friends and her sweet baby. There is something deeply restorative about a few days spent with someone who knew you before the full swing of adulthood—and now watching her step into motherhood with grace, humor, and a beautiful, smiley four-month-old in tow!

And in a twist that feels almost paradoxically luxurious, knowing me: I have no travel plans for the next six weeks. A rare treat! I’m looking forward to a stretch of ordinary days—work, walks in Atlanta spring, cooking dinner at home, and the quiet satisfaction of putting our little routines back in place.

Naturally, this lull has also triggered the annual spring cleaning impulse. This weekend I’m beginning the ritual of swapping the closet from fall/winter to spring/summer. I’m also flirting with a slightly over-the-top organizational project: photographing and Indyx-ing my entire wardrobe so I can digitally catalog everything I own, à la Cher Horowitz (use code LAURENTILASHALSKI for $10 off a premium membership!).

I just started this novel and I’m already hooked. Written by royal reporter Omid Scobie, it dives into the fascinating machinery behind modern royal coverage.

As a bonus: our heroine’s name is Lauren, which always earns a few extra points from me. :)

Watching | Love Story

Who isn’t?

Yes, I’m aware of the critiques—the melodrama, the acting choices, the occasional heavy-handed writing. But anything that offers a glimpse into the closest thing America has to a royal family will always have my attention.

A line stopped me cold this week while reading the third installment of The Thursday Murder Club series:

“As the years go by, you will find that people need someone who is bright and kind more than they need someone who knows how to dance and has got the right haircut.”

And here’s the twist: it’s said by the villain!!! Even the antagonist understands this particular brand of wisdom.

It is so easy — especially online — to slide into comparison mode. To believe you must be sharper, thinner, more styled, more clever, more on-trend. To feel scarcity nibbling at your ankles. There is always someone with better lighting, a better haircut, and, oh, by the way, they’ve finished a DIY kitchen renovation in the time it took you to read this.

But the people in your real life? They do not need a tastemaker. They need a good friend.

They need someone bright. Someone kind. Someone steady.

The algorithm rewards spectacle. Real life rewards softness.

A reminder for you. It sure has been for me.

It’s a reminder that cultural moments we once accepted without blinking deserve a second look.

On this episode of IMO by Higher Ground, Mrs. Obama and her brother Craig answer listener questions — and at one point she impersonates Teresa Giudice flipping the table.

There is something deeply healing about Michelle Obama discussing Real Housewives lore. It felt like worlds colliding in the best possible way — I wonder what Teresa would have to say about “When they go low, we go high?”.

Happy Friday!

I’ve been a touch under the weather this week, which means I’ve never been more grateful for a low-key holiday weekend. Our Valentine’s plans this year lean into exactly that rhythm: a couples massage at a ritzy hotel in town and a Sunday lunch date to follow — decadent without derailing the entire weekend.

Perhaps because my energy has been limited, I’ve been newly intrigued by the idea of the lunch date generally. In a culture that insists date nights are the gold standard of marital effort — late reservations, heavy meals, expensive wine, racing home to change after long office days, juggling social calendars — it can start to feel like performance rather than pleasure. And if you’re drinking? Add Ubers and next-day fog. (We don’t even have children and it still feels like logistical gymnastics!!!!)

I first heard the concept from Katie of Beach Reads and Bubbly, and Carter and I have started flirting with it ourselves: slipping out midday for a soup and salad, sipping on a mocktail, sunlight streaming in instead of candlelight. You return home energized instead of exhausted. It feels civilized. Sustainable. Lightly European!

Happy Friday!

This week, I am writing to you as someone who absolutely did not wake up on Monday feeling like a paragon of discipline and drive.

There are seasons — and sometimes just random Tuesdays — when I feel wildly unproductive. I move through the day doing what is required, but without that fizz I so love to romanticize.

And in the past, I would have responded to that feeling with force. More lists. More pressure. More self-scolding. Surely the solution to feeling uninspired is to simply try harder?

Apparently not.

This week, while listening to my Joy 101 app, I heard something that stopped me in my tracks. Cheria Young shared a simple reframing: when you need a boost, dedicate your day to someone.

To a parent or parental figure who sacrificed so you could have choices they didn’t.
To a friend walking through something heavy.
To a role model whose discipline you admire.
Or — and this one undid me — to your former self. The version of you who once prayed, schemed, journaled, and hoped to be exactly where you are right now.

All they wanted was this place.

There is something incredibly clarifying about shifting the focus outward. About deciding, “Today, I will show up well not because I feel like it, but because it honors someone.”

I tried it. I dedicated a workday to my younger self — the one who would have been thrilled to know where we landed. And suddenly the emails felt less tedious. The workout less optional. The small disciplines less negotiable. Not because I became a productivity machine, but because I remembered that I am living inside someone’s answered prayer.

If you’ve been feeling a little flat, a little stalled, a little “what is the point of any of this,” consider borrowing this trick. Dedicate the day. Let it be in someone’s honor. Sometimes motivation doesn’t come from squeezing yourself harder; sometimes it comes from remembering who you’re doing it for.

He sent me off with two complimentary sweet treats!

Reading | How to Age Disgracefully by Clare Pooley

Clare Pooley is one of my absolute favorite authors, and I finally got off the Libby waitlist for this (relatively) new release. Multiple narrators, set in Britain, sharp humor threaded through genuine heart — it’s my exact sweet spot. The characters are delightfully imperfect and gloriously defiant in that very British way that makes rebellion feel polite.

Watching | Winter Olympics Documentaries

Miracle: The Boys of ‘80 – A new documentary from producers Max Gershberg and Jacob Rogal revisiting the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” U.S. hockey team. The never-before-seen 16mm footage alone makes it worth the watch. It’s nostalgic, patriotic, and deeply cinematic!

Glitter & Gold: Ice Dancing – From the creators of Simone Biles Rising, this follows top ice dancing teams — including Madison Chock & Evan Bates and Piper Gilles & Paul Poirier — as they chase gold. I have never related more to Madi risking it all for a fashion moment. I will be watching that skirt with baited breath!

Listening | The Great Divide by Noah Kahan

I love Noah Kahan, and a mid-winter single release feels so Stick Season of him. I am already counting down to the album and tour, but for now this song is on repeat — equal parts achey and expansive.

Trying | THC Drinks

Technically, I’ve been trying these for the last five weeks (who am I?). I did a full review of my improbable yet orderly descent into THC mocktails, featuring fourteen different options, and I’m officially converted — particularly as a gentle alternative to a glass of wine or nighttime wind down.

My ultimate favorite candle for spring and summer. It is crisp, clean, and luxurious — like a sunlit kitchen with freshly sliced citrus on the counter. If I could bottle “effortless hostess,” it would smell exactly like this.

This past weekend, bustled up indoors from the winter storms, I found myself wrapped in some of the most soul-stirring comfort content: Theo of Golden and Les Misérables. Two very different worlds. Two very tender reminders. And both circling the same exquisite truth: to love another person is to see the face of God.

There is something about stories of redemption, loyalty, sacrifice — the quiet, stubborn choice to love anyway — that steadies me when the real world feels sharp around the edges. In both narratives, love is not naïve. It is costly. It is inconvenient. It asks something of you. And yet, it is the only force that ultimately redeems.

This week carried its own heaviness. You may have felt it too — the low hum of headlines, the collective fatigue, the temptation to harden just a little. When that happens, I try to turn my attention deliberately toward the good that still pulses through humanity. The small mercies. The unseen sacrifices. The neighbor who shows up. The friend who checks in. The stranger who chooses gentleness over indifference.

If awe is a practice (and I believe it is), so is generosity of spirit.

So today, consider this your nudge: look for the good. Name it. Thank it. And where you can, become it. Extend the kindness. Offer the softer response. Let your love be sturdy and active and unembarrassed.

Reading | The Correspondent by Virginia Evans

I just finished this novel, told exclusively through letters. No traditional narration — just correspondence unfolding over the course of decades. The characters are deeply flawed, occasionally maddening, yet so very human that I felt emotionally tethered to them by the end. There is something intimate about reading someone else’s letters — it made me want to bring pen to paper myself!

Watching | Bridgerton (Season 4)

I am watching as I pen this letter, and the costuming alone deserves its own award category. Absolute visual confection. The colors, the tailoring, the absurdly romantic lighting — pure eye candy. It’s escapist in the most sumptuous way, and frankly, I am not above being swept away by it!

Somehow NBC-sanctioned and delightfully unhinged. Hosted by Las Culturistas (aka Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers), this Winter Olympics podcast is sure to carry me through the lead-up to and coverage of Milan. This week's episode with Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir is hilarious and features a good bit of Traitors insight!

Happy Friday!

Between the Tuckernuck sample sale (my personal Super Bowl, Olympics, and birthday rolled into one), and enough cultural drama to power a group chat for months — Taylor, Karamo, Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, the Beckhams — I have been activated.

Wearing | Aritzia Effortless Pant

I have been on a mission for a truly tailored pant. Something more substantial than the Amazon pair that carried me loyally but, let’s be honest, was never going to win any longevity awards.

Enter: the Aritzia Effortless Pant.

These are beautifully made, and the mid-range price point makes sense once you try them on. They look polished without trying too hard, which is exactly my uniform sweet spot. As I mentioned in my article on romanticizing systems, when I find a workhorse, I commit. Yes, I am acquiring multiple colors!

Sizing note: I sized up twice.

  • My true size? Absolutely not.

  • One size up? Technically fit, but heaven forbid I wanted to tuck in anything thicker than a cotton blouse.

  • Two sizes up? Perfection. Tailored, but breathable. Chic, but capable of eating lunch.

Eating | Best Chili Ever

This is not hyperbole.

Perfect for a Sunday simmer while the wind does dramatic things outside and you pretend you are in a Nancy Meyers kitchen.

Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp olive oil

  • 2 lbs lean ground beef

  • 1 large yellow onion, finely chopped

  • 3 cloves garlic, finely minced

  • 2 (14.5 oz) cans diced tomatoes with green chilies

  • 3 (8 oz) cans tomato sauce

  • 1/2 cup beef broth

  • 2 Tbsp chili powder

  • 2 1/2 tsp ground cumin

  • 2 tsp paprika

  • 2 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1 tsp granulated sugar

  • 1/2 tsp ground coriander

  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

  • 1 (15 oz) can dark red kidney beans, drained and rinsed

  • 1 (15 oz) can light red kidney beans, drained and rinsed

  • Shredded cheddar cheese, for serving

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large, deep skillet over medium-high heat.

  2. Add onion and sauté 3 minutes, then add garlic and cook 30 seconds more. Transfer to a 6–7 quart slow cooker.

  3. Return skillet to medium-high heat, add beef, and cook until browned. Drain most of the fat (leave about 2 Tbsp if you like a little extra flavor — I do). Add beef to slow cooker.

  4. Stir in diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, broth, chili powder, cumin, paprika, cocoa powder, sugar, coriander, salt, and pepper.

  5. Cover and cook on low for 5–6 hours.

  6. Stir in beans during the last hour.

  7. Serve warm with shredded cheddar (and, in my opinion, a bunch of Fritos).

It freezes beautifully. You’re welcome.

A debut novel by Aisha Muharrar (a former writer on Hacks, The Good Place, and Parks & Recreation), told across years and memory. It’s a tender meditation on grief, friendship, and the strange ways love lingers. Beautifully written. Quietly devastating. And I'm only 100 pages in!

Watching | People We Meet on Vacation

Carter and I both giggled A TON, which feels like the highest marital endorsement!

I’m slightly sad I didn’t read the book first — you know I usually insist on that order — but it was charming, romantic, and easy in a way that felt perfect for a cozy night in or while throwing together a late brunch at home.

Listening | Dianaworld by Edward White

An unflinching unpacking of Diana the human and a thoughtful dismantling of Princess Diana the mythology.

If you’re interested in media, narrative-building, or how we collectively create icons, it’s fascinating. Equal parts cultural analysis and character study.

Trying | Cann Social Tonics

If you’ve been following along on Instagram, you know I’ve been experimenting with THC beverages during dry(ish) January. A full review is coming soon, but for now: Cann is one of my favorites.

Their flavorless drops are ideal for social settings — no CBD, so you feel light and buzzy without being overly subdued.

This week, I’ve been gently meditating on the idea of wonder in the everyday—the quieter awe that lives in routines we usually rush through. Morning light hitting the kitchen counter just right. A familiar walk feeling new. The satisfaction of putting things back where they belong.

My mindset was inspired by a Joy 101 session from earlier this week. Amidst the flurry of a busy morning, I paused long enough to write down a line that felt settled deep into my heart:

“Awe is a gift. And it’s also a practice. When you train your attention toward wonder, joy often follows close behind.”

It’s been shaping how I’ve moved through my days, especially as I am reading Theo of Golden, a novel of a similar thesis. I am trying to linger a little longer, notice a little more, and look up whenever I can.

If you know me, you know I’ve had my nose in a book since I was six years old, but in the past few days I’ve had a recalibrated reverence for my favorite analog pastime. It started when I was reading The Book of Alchemy by Suleika Jaouad on Sunday and I stumbled upon a line that stopped me in my tracks:

“I have long believed that journaling allows you to alchemize isolation into creative solitude. As it happens, reading also enacts that shift.”

Isn’t that divine?

Not long after I read this passage, I received the sweetest note on Instagram in response to a video I shared. A woman asked if I read often—she said my vocabulary gave it away! It made me blush (positive)! A reminder that the stories we read and the ideas we hold don’t stay tucked inside our books; they shape how we move through the world, how we speak, and how we present ourselves.

So consider this your encouragement to treat reading as more than a passive hobby or indulgence! Invest in a Kindle (pre-owned is the chic, sensible move—under $80!). One of my New Year’s intentions was to read more poetry, and I started strong with this effervescent, relatable anthology. It feels modern, honest, and perfectly bite-sized. Highly recommend following Lyndsay on Instagram—she often shares her poetry there, and it’s just as delightful.

Watching | Traitors

My favorite show is back. Carter and I treat this as true appointment television, and the lineup of stars this season practically guarantees a hit. Cozy, campy, and deliciously dramatic.

Listening | Nobody's Girl by Virgina Giuffre

A necessary preface: this book is dark. It is graphic and emotionally heavy, depicting nearly every form of abuse imaginable. That said, it is remarkably compelling and powerfully told, offering clarity around how someone can become trapped in such horrific circumstances. If you listen, protect your peace and step away when needed. The scope is staggering—implicating seismic names across politics (both sides of the aisle), academia, science, entertainment, and business.

Happy Friday!

As I am writing this, Carter and I are celebrating our four-year wedding anniversary, which feels both impossibly quick and yet like we’ve lived a million lives since that unseasonably warm winter day. I will never forget sitting by his side as our reception ballroom danced with candlelight, loved ones chatting over dinner, and a 12-piece band gently playing the old jazz standards. Oh how lucky are we to have such beautiful memories.

We’re also in full Christmas-party swing, ricocheting from gathering to gathering with equal parts joy and . . . well, exhaustion. My belly is a little rounder from the yummiest bites, my face a touch puffier from a few too many glasses of cabernet, and I’m also having so much fun. Despite the tiredness, I am embracing all the cheer and festivity while it is at its crescendo.

I’ve been piping Christmas carols through every room, curling up with holiday novels, and tonight I’m off to the Atlanta Gay Men’s Choir—with a pre-show glass of bubbles at a swanky bar, naturally.

In this beautifully crafted book, Suleika explores journaling as a magical portal back to creativity, gathering wisdom from one hundred writers, artists, and thinkers. Essays, prompts, rituals—the tools for building a more inspired life.

And I’m not waiting until January to begin my first resolution of 2026! I journaled through college and throughout Carter’s illness, and I’m returning to the practice with this book as my guide in anticipation of her 30-day New Year journaling challenge.

Happy Friday!

This week unfurled in its own particular brand of seasonal overwhelm—an elegant chaos of overlapping holiday party invitations, logistics stacked like gift boxes, and a relentless cascade of brand messages and events. Somewhere between the RSVPs and the reminders, I realized I was moving through my days with my shoulders nearly glued into my ears and my teeth clenched like porcelain.

So I stopped.

And I returned to the essence of the season.

I changed my phone background to a quilt, because it felt simple and reminded me of my Grandma.

I put on pajamas, lit a candle, and turned a meditation on Hoda Kotb’s Joy 101 app. Deep inhale; another small inhale; exhale. Two more times.

I delegated the to-do list and, where I couldn’t delegate, I removed from the list altogether.

The truth is: I won’t make it to every event. I won’t see everyone. Some ideas will stay in my Notes app. The wishlist won’t be perfectly checked off. And for the first time in a long time, that feels not like a failure—but like true joy. I am choosing the elegant no. The intentional absence. The space to breathe.

There’s no Lauren Letter next week as I step back for Thanksgiving, and as I use the time to honor the quiet and give myself permission to be fully present, I really hope you do to. BRRRR!

I am cold. Not figuratively, not poetically—just honestly, seasonally, bone-deep cold! The kind of cold that has me burrowing into layers of cashmere, wool, and down-feather duvets like a small, shivering Victorian child in a Christmas novel. Fire has officially transitioned from aesthetic accessory to functional survival tool.

This, of course, is not helped by the fact that my husband likes to remind me, as he turns the thermostat down to a glacial 65 degrees, that “we are not the Rockefellers.” I by no means am trying to represent myself as a victim, but if that’s the role I am cast in, so be it! I kindly reminded him that he can use all of our energy savings on an extravagent Christmas gift for me (cough, cough).

Thankfully, I am also finding myself within in a golden age for content. My evenings have become a cozy rotation of books, audiobooks, and television programming so good it almost makes me forget I can see my own breath. Almost.

Happy Friday!

This week finds our home in full early-Christmas swing — the Frontgate boxes have arrived, the garlands are being fluffed, and the little quiet corners of our house are slowly turning festive. I know it’s early, but there’s something about easing into the season instead of rushing into it — letting the magic take shape slowly, room by room.

Daylight savings has helped, in its own gentle way. These long evenings arrive sooner now, encouraging us to soften our pace, close the blinds, cook a real dinner, and actually be home. The candles are lit a bit earlier, the tea kettle works overtime, and the house feels like a cashmere sweater.

And while October gets all the poetic love, I’ll say it plainly: in Atlanta — where summer lingers far longer than it should — November might just be my favorite month. The leaves have been miraculous this year, like they’re showing off. Every time I look out the window or drive down a tree-lined street, I feel a flicker of gratitude and wonder. It is golden here — truly.

Watching | The Newsroom

After our fourth (yes . . . fourth) rewatch of The West Wing, Carter and I finally dove into Aaron Sorkin’s other HBO cult classic: The Newsroom. I didn’t expect it to follow real events so closely — and the Gabby Giffords (who I ADORE) scene set to “Fix You”? I was undone.

Listening | Maisie Peters New Singles

I’ve been a fan since I saw her open for Taylor at Wembley in London, and her two new releases are pure, lyrical ache. “Audrey Hepburn” is breathtaking, and, dare I say it, perhaps the most softly stunning love song ever written (there, I said it!). I actually cried the first time I listened. If these two songs don’t satiate you, The Good Witch (the album and the song) is pure, lyrical ache.

Mycah Hunter’s world feels straight out of a Nancy Meyers movie — all warm light, soft textures, and immediately welcoming. I’m obsessed with her home: perfectly curated yet comfortable, the kind of space that makes you want to curl up with a book and take notes for your next redecorating project.

Happy Friday!

Happy Halloween, friends! I hope your week has been filled with just the right kind of magic — a flicker of candlelight, the rustle of leaves underfoot, and maybe a little mischief in the air. This is the moment when pumpkins glow on porches, candy mysteriously disappears from the bowl, and the veil between cozy and spooky feels delightfully thin.

Earlier this week, I had the chance to see (and even meet!) my idol Hoda Kotb at the Atlanta Women’s Foundation Luncheon, and she shared something that’s been echoing in my mind ever since. She talked about how, when it feels like everything is going to hell in a handbasket (my words, not hers) she often repeats a simple mantra: “Good things keep happening to me.”

It’s her way of manifesting — and in turn, of noticing all the good things in her life that were already there: the parking spot that opened up right on time, her trainer being available early, her girls sleeping soundly through the night. In other words, sometimes the magic isn’t in summoning something new, but in seeing what’s already before you.

So here’s to a Halloween filled with spells of laughter, the enchantment of every day goodness, and, of course, lots of treats!

It has the meditation and mindfulness features I already love from other apps — but with Hoda’s signature warmth woven through. When I saw her earlier this week, Hoda said that “happiness is something that happens to you, but joy is something that exists within you” — and that idea anchors the app’s entire experience.
